Bicycle Gears Questions asked
Open Question: What kind of Bicycle wheels do I need?
Ok, so I just bought an old cruiser at a yard sale yesterday and I've pretty much stripped it down. I've noticed a rising popularity in fixed gear cruisers and I want to convert mine. The wheels that came on the bike were your standard 26 x 2.125 cruiser wheels, but I want to put on some track wheels and don't know what size/kind/type to get. Obviously cruiser frames tend to be heavier than your average fixie, so I'm looking for a wheel set that won't break right under me. HELP??!Yeah...You think Im kidding:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVUx9v1VZyA moreOpen Question: New bicycle cassette slightly loose, cannot tighten more. Is it wrong one? Can I get spacers?
I'm trying to replace a 7 speed mountain bike cassette. I've got the tools, and more or less know how to use them. The old one came off OK. The new one fits on, but then I try to tighten it, the screw-in end goes in freely, bit stops screwing in before the cassette is tight. There might be 1 mm of play. Could this be a wrong cassette? Or is there some trick I do not know - maybe a spacer that is required. I replaced the old cassette, so I am reasonably certain I did not lose anything from the way it was set up - and working - before. I am changing the cassette just to have a wider range of gears. Thanks for any help.Bikeworks: Thanks. It is a 7 speed cassette. The first gear wheel is separate, and the other 6 are either firmly connected to one another, or in one piece. I did check the old cassette looking for a spacer, but the back surface looked flat with no sign of a spacer. I had been thinking in terms of a spacer on the outside of the unit, just under the screw-in wheel. At least I now know that was wrong. The new cassette is an Ebay special, so I have no idea of its pedigree. Anyway, if spacers exist, that should do the job. I am very grateful for your response. moreOpen Question: Do 3 speed gears actually work?
I've just put a bicycle together for my girlfriend and it has one cog and the front and one on the back wheel. Then I followed instructions on how to attach a little box and push rod to the back wheel to make '3 gears'. Does this actually produce three different speeds even though there's only one cog on the back wheel? Or is it a trick that just makes pedalling stiffer/easier? ...I have no ideaedit : 'one cog ON the front' (not and) moreResolved Question: change bicycle back wheel gears?
I got Racing bike (Apolo) aluminum, and I would like to change it to single gear ? mine it was 7 Gears , it is Possible to change it to single gear ? because I found the wheels so expensivful .. any help moreVoting Question: Can you change bicycle gears when they are parked?
Is it okay to change bicycle gears while it is parked without risking the chain coming out? Or can you change them only while riding them? moreOpen Question: Best bicycle gear for my budget?
Alright guys -- I picked up quite an old school road bike from my friend. It appears to be around 20-25 years old, and is a Schwinn Sprint. I took it into Bike World, and they told me what needed to be done. Basically, I need a new rear tire (two may be better just in case), new tubes, grip tape, and new pedals, although I think that is just because I mentioned I am doing a triathlon in 4 weeks. Did I mention I am doing a triathlon in four weeks? ;-) Anyway, I have a pretty small budget to work with. I have around $250 to work with (which might grow this Monday, but I want to keep it low). What would you guys recommend me getting to build this bike into race shape? If you would provide me with names and links, that would really help. Even better, if you are familiar with the Schwinn Sprint road bike (which retailed for $170 back when, so you know it was killer), please help me out. By the way, I believe the size of the wheel is 26". Thanks, guys!Oops, I meant to say a new rear wheel and maybe the front one as well, although I should go ahead and get new tires as well. lolI know what needs to be replaced, but I wondered if you guys had budget brands you would recommend and places to shop. I have been visited Bike Parts USA. After measuring the wheels, it appears to be around 25", but if I am replacing both wheels, do I really need to worry about that? Please let me know. If you want a look at how the Sprint model looks, here's a shot: http://oldtenspeedgallery.com/blog/wp-content/bikes/forsale/boston-schwinn-sprint.jpgBy the way, the bike above is not mine, but just a representation. It sounded to me that the bearings were fine, but some of the spokes were loose. That was what he mentioned anyway, and he does have the air of an expert (Bike World is a very popular place here in Des Moines).Turns out they are 27" x 1 1/4" to fit tires. The reason I think the guy mentioned replacing the wheels are because some of the spokes are loose and may break. If this isn't something to really be worried about, than fine, I will focus on tires and tubes. Does that sound good? moreResolved Question: Why is my rear bicycle wheel not turning when I pedal?
I recently acquired a Cannondale Super V 700 and I noticed that every once in awhile my pedals went very loose, and then it went permanently loose. Now the pedals do not turn the rear wheel, but the rear wheel is not locked up, and it spins freely when manually turned by hand. The bike's gears also work well and shift when the pedals are turned. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Austin moreResolved Question: help with bicycle gears?
I just bought a bike after 10 years. There so many gears on it and i'm not sure which one to use. the left shifter has 3 and the right has 7. I only need it for roads, no hills. i heard 2 on the left is for normal riding. what number should the right shifter be on? moreResolved Question: Need pedal bicycle help please!?
hi, I have a pedal bicycle and on the rear tyre there is a bar that seems to hold the tire and the gears together, but it has bent and something has snapped off it and I need a new one but I don't know what it is called or where to get one from =) http://www.btwincycle.com/EN/files/assets/21673486-guide-user-en/guide-user-en.pdf it is on this document on page 35 step F but the back tire instead of the front tyre is the bar that fits through. Any help would be much appreciated! thanks in advanceoh, and also when the I tighten the quick release, it will go tight but there the wheel moves from left to right. It is hard to explain. The rod has 2 'stoppers' at each end of the tire attached on the rod and one is missing which has been snapped off, and i have looked online for a quick release bar but it doesnt have the 'stoppers' attached*and for the rear wheel moreResolved Question: Shimano Tiagra - Bicycle gear change?
Just bought a bike and am unsure if I'm using the gears right. The changers are situated behind the break levers and can be pushed only one way - I assume if you push the left one you go down a gear and push the right one you go up a gear (like with formula one paddle changer) but I'm not sure I feel the gear changes so maybe it's the other way round left is up gear change and right is down a gear. Or maybe something happens when you push both at the same time? Keep me right and tell me what I should be doing, can't find anything on the net about how these work - possibly the gear is broken and that why I dont feel the change???Eh no - I won't be observing the chain on the back wheel whilst I'm cycling on the road. No commom sense more like. Thanks Bob A but these aren't usual your usual gears - you cant turn each lever left and right to corresponding numbers to move up and down - each gear lever lever can only be pushe one way - it's a paddle that you push in then release and they are exactly the same on each handle. Thanks Sno and Peter- I really should have asked in store but didn't think I'd need to but I'd never have imagined the break lever moves aswell!Oh and sorry Bob - I've worked it out now and reckon you were right I just didn't understand from your words! moreResolved Question: Could these bike parts match up?

Let me spell it out for ya. First I have an 88 Ford Ranger. Yes I know it's an old vehicle so please don't remind me of that. The truck had it's problems nothing major though when I got it from my step dad a few weeks ago. A few weeks ago I was rushing to get to church and tried to pass somebody but they wanted to be jerks and speed up so I had to floor it. The next day the truck kinda started spitting and sputtering like it wanted to die especially when it was about to change gears. Then the temperature gauge went up just a little bit higher than usual still within the normal range but higher than usual. After that I started to hear a noise that sounded kinda like the noise a bicycle makes when you put a card in the spokes of the tire. The truck has been spitting sputtering and has lost some power. The noise I believe is an exhaust leak. The last oil change was about 5 months ago and the last time the spark plugs and wires were changed was plugs a year ago wires years upon years I believe. Not sure what the problem is so some advice would be nice. Gotta keep my ole trusty rusty running. moreResolved Question: Do you think you could make these distances with a bicycle within a day?
I am planing to make some bicycle trips and im wondering if this could be done in actual : The Starting City : Oradea The Objective CIty : Debrecen. DIstance between Oradea and Debrecen (calculated with google earth on a national road ) 73.25 Km . Average speed : 20 Km/h Time until arrival to Debrecen (from Oradea ) : 3 hours and 33 minutes. The necessary tools will be bought in case of technical failures, also water and some food will be bought ,more likely it will be some energy bars or something that would give enough strength to go back to the starting point. And from DEbrecen to Oradea would be another 3 hours and 33 minutes . This is a total of 7 hours and 6 minutes of cyciling . Of course we will probably make a 5 rest between this time but do you think this is possible to go such distances in this time with a mountain bike ? Of course the wheels are for off road but the bicycle has gears. The other trip would be from Oradea to Alesd . Distance between The two cities : 42 Km Average Speed 18.8 Km./h TIme until arrival to Alest ( From Oradea ) : 2 hours and 15 minutes . The same equipment would be bought, and this is a shorter trip. moreVoting Question: Bicycle for around town?
I currently have a Schwinn Sidewinder. If I were to get a road bike, would I see a difference in the time that I go from point a to point b? With my bike currently, I usually exceed the power of the gears and often limits me to how fast I go. If I were to get a road bike, what should I get? I don't want something that I'll have to save forever. I use my bike to get around town because my car got totaled and I have no car now. moreVoting Question: help me with my homework please?
A boy leaves on a bicycle trip at the rate of 8 mph. One hour later the father, realizing that his son forgot his camping gear, sets out by car. How fast must the father drive to overtake the boy in 15 minutes? moreResolved Question: why are bicyclists allowed to ride on the public streets and highways with reckless abandon!?
Everyone else who is on the public streets and highways is required by law to either wear or have their means of transportation equipped with "approved" safety equipment. But bicyclists for some reason feel they are above the law and do not have to wear any safety gear (don't try to tell me the little helmet is protective because it is not), their bicycles do not have to have any safety equipment like: brake lights (thats so one can tell if they are stopping), turn signals (so you can tell if they are going to turn and which way. hmm motorcycles have them by law), a windshield or goggles so they are not blinded by bugs (and swerve in front of unsuspecting diligent driver who is not following too close), anti-lock brakes, rear view mirrors, license plate (I know they don't have to be registered but some means of easy identification must be required). If they want to disregard safety (theirs and yours), then they should not be allowed by law to ride on the public roads and highways. moreVoting Question: NEED HELP AND ADVICE ON PURCHASING A NEW BIKE!!!?

What bikes should I look into? I have a great bike, a Panasonic DX 2000, but I've been having problems with it, which return shortly after it's been to the shop for tune-ups and to be fixed. It looks like this http://www.rogerwendell.com/images/cycling/panasonic_dx_2000_bicycle.jpg I'd like a new bike with many of the characteristics of this one. But it seems like they don't make bikes the way they used to in the mid 80's. 1) I'd like a light weight racing bike with a similar build, which would allow me to turn effectively just by leaning. 2) I'd like a similar gear system to the one I have now, if possible. I don't like the electonic gear feel. 3) I'm looking for a bike that can take a lot of beating. It doesn't have to look flashy. Thanks!! moreResolved Question: How to remove noise coming from my bicycle pedal?
Hi. My bicycle's right pedal makes a clicking sound whenever it reaches the bottom. Whenever the pedal reaches the bottom, a sound comes, like a 'click'. Earlier, it didn't used to (bought it around 2 yrs ago) but only recently has it started. Also, when I work the pedal with my hand, my bike slanted on the stand, the noise disappears. It's only when someone is sitting and riding it, then the noise comes. Does it mean that my pedal has broken? Or is it something because of the high gear, because whenever I'm in the high gear, the sound is more loud. Please note that my bike also has a central main suspension. The bike I have is this: http://www.indiabizclub.com/uploads05/12/0/0711822660.jpg Please answer, as even a little info will help, though a better explanatory answer will be much appreciated.Thank you for your reply john m bike, I'll surely go through that page whose link you posted. I have an adult tricycle with front brake and rear basket, single speed, steel frame that I bought from the estate of an old woman. Its great and the basket is the perfect size to haul around my fishing gear on the river trails. The problem is that its single speed and can't do hills at all. I'm looking for a kit to convert it to electric power (preferably) or possibly a gas engine. I've heard that the kits for a bicycle will not work and will require additional parts but I don't know what extra parts. Does anyone know of a website or store that sells conversion kits geared specifically for tricycles? I've seen the complete converted trikes for sale, but I can't find the conversion kits anywhere. Thanks for the help! moreResolved Question: Help! My 3 speed bicycle wont shift into 1st gear anymore. Any clue how to fix this?
Hi, i have a 3 speed bicycle that i purchased/fixed from a bike rescue in Albany. Unfortunately i do not know the model. I know that when i turn the shifter up front it will go to 1,2 and 3. But 1 and 2 are the middle range, and 3 still remains the high gear. When i look at the hub in the back, when on 1 or 2 it remains the same, and moves on the shift to 3. If you haven't guessed im not too bike savoy, but any help would be great. Thank You So Much for your time and help. moreResolved Question: Shopping for a bicycle and overwhelmed by the choices... help?
I'm shopping for a bicycle for myself, and while I know some of what I want, I'm overwhelmed by the choices that I'm finding online and in stores. I need a 26" women's bicycle. It's going to be used for general travel in the area (as I don't own a car), errands, small grocery trips, etc., so mostly street riding. The city I live in is very flat, not hilly at all, so I'm not too concerned about how many gears it has. I do know I want caliper breaks, not coaster breaks. I've looked at cruiser bikes, mountain bikes, street bikes, and I'm lost as to what works best for my needs. I'm also on a very tight budget (I'm on disability), so that's a key factor as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's been suggested by a few friends that I go to any of the local bike shops, but specialty stores are always so intimidating, and the prices are usually through the roof. Thank you in advance for your answers!edward: thanks for the reply, but there's the rub: a $260 bicycle is nearly half a months income for me, and really something I can't afford right now. Guess I'll just stick to the bus. :( moreVoting Question: Why is it helpful to have more than one gear on a bicycle?

As an avid bicyclist and runner for many years, I recently got a fixed gear bike together from a few bikes that were laying around. The bicycling lifestyle looks really appealing to me more than ever and I want to save up for a decent, lightweight road bike with all the bells and whistles.I haven't biked for a few months now and I am wondering if you think fixed gear bikes are good for cadence. This being my first fixed gear bike, I found it fascinating that I have to pedal constantly or fall off. I just came from a 40 mile round trip and my legs feel awesome. I run a 40x16 ratio for now and surprisingly I am really fast on this gear. I feel this ratio is best for hills and that I can go faster but I have this ratio for now willing to work my way up to 14 then eventually 11 in the back. I have the logic in my head that it does do wonders for your cadence but something tells me to ask someone that would know. Thank you all in advance! moreResolved Question: I think bicycle garb looks clownish.I will not wear it.?

Why are some bikes fixed/non-fixed geared? -What are the different types used for and what do YOU prefer? Hi there. I need a sturdy bike to get me through the ride. I have a preference for 21 shimano gears, and I am used to bicycles that are more like mountain bikes. I feel wobbly on racing type bikes. I have a budget of about £150, but I am hoping for some recommendations and possibly get one secondhand on Ebay. Thanks for any help xx moreResolved Question: Buying a fixed gear bicycle?
Hi guys, I'm looking into buying a fixed gear bike but I have a problem with size. I'm 6ft4, so I need an "XL" frame but don't even know where to start looking! I only have about £150-200 to spend so I don't even know if that'll be sufficient? Thanks for reading! -Jamie. moreResolved Question: Bike Gear Questions~ >.<?
I have a few questions about Bike Gears... 1. Why do you need to pedal faster to go at the same speed when your bicycle is in lower gear? Is it because, when you are in low gear, you have to pedal faster because you have to trade force with speed. So you get to use less force , but you go slower? And then in high gear, if you want you require more force and go faster? 2. Which gear helps you go faster on level ground and why? Because you have to use more force but you can go farther, but why on level ground, is it because it is harder to apply effort force on the pedals when on an incline? So when on level ground, gravity isn't acting on you as much as it would a hill? 3. Why do you use low gear when going up hills? Is it because you are using less force, but you have to pedal faster, but the work is spread over a distance? Then you don't use as much effort trying to push the pedals, but in return, you go slower. But it is all spread over a distance..... (So confused... >.<;;;) (I hope you can understand what I said.... I hate science >.<) moreResolved Question: What are the benefits and disadvantages of a single speed bicycle?

Ok so here's the deal. I've got a one week vacation and weekends to do some bicycle "touring" (due to a full time job). My current dream is to carry a Hennessey hammock (I already own), as few clothes as possible, lots of water, a little food, perhaps a few electronics etc. I'm gearing to do stealth camping as it will be the cheapest but I have no bicycle to do this. Ok, so I have a Schwinn Midtown that I bought from Costco. I have all of the stock parts except I changed the tires. I find that now when I peddle the bicycle goes too slow in 21st gear and I would like to know what I can do to make it (harder) to peddle in order to speed up the bicycle. Is there something that I can do in the Rear Casette? Please help me, I really have no clue what to do. moreResolved Question: biking and backpacking trip...?
Wondering if anyone's ever done it before, if you've got any advice. I'm going on a summerlong roadtrip this summer, biking to my destinations, and backpacking into the backcountry as well. This raises some interesting difficulties, like where to stash my bike and extra gear when I backpack, storing my too-long backpack on my small rack, how to pack, what to pack, etc. Also, I don't know much about what sort of fixes I need to make on the bicycle, to make it more expedition worthy. So any advice or stories? moreResolved Question: Bike gears.... The number of teeth on the sprockets?
