Fish For The Aquarium Questions asked

Open Question: Attraction confusion (growing up is so hard!)?

Okay, so I recently got my first boyfriend and after knowing each other for a LONG time (two days) he put his weeny into my vagina. Although the problem is, the only way i can orgasm is by looking at my two fish while he does it. What do i do if he wants to have his weeny in me at his house? can i bring my fish? or suggest an aquarium date? NEED ADVICE! (this is not a joke.) more

Open Question: Fish problems... help?!?

I have had a five gallon aquarium for about five months. In the beginning I had two male guppies, two african dwarf frogs, and two mystery snails. This month one of my snails and guppies died. I decided to replace them with two guppies, as I read that they do better in groups of three or more. I bought the two new guppies about two days ago. One of them, I found out later, was sick. It looked like he had a classic case of swim bladder disease, as the previous fish that died had. He died today. I put his body in another container, and examined him to make sure. I noticed little white worms, which I think are Planaria worms. I think the new fish brought them in, as I haven't seen them before. The nitrate and nitrite levels and the ammonia are good. I condition the water, and the pH is fine too. I have a little salt in the aquarium, but not too much, because I have a snail in the water. I feed the fish about a pinch per day. The snail I feed about half an algae disc every few days, and the frogs I feed several bloodworms per day. Please help me! more

Open Question: Pleco not eating zucchini... What should I do to help them eat it?

Hey guys... I've had 2 plecos for about a month now. Yes, I'll admit, I assumed they were bottom feeders and would have enough food to eat on the bottom. But I have 2 small koi like gold fish that keep the floor clean. Aside from that, plecos don't really eat other fish droppings anyway. I did some research and it turns out - aside from algae pellets, they eat all kinds of vegetables. So I bought a zucchini, then I stuck a stainless fork through a SLICE and sunk it into my aquarium... The plecos are ignoring the zucchini. Anything I can put on/do the zucchini to make it more attractive? Also I just added 3 new male platy to my tank (joining my 3 females platy). It's a 90 gallon tank, I don't think they'd have that much effect on the plecos, would they? My plecos are only 3" long and I'm looking forward to properly feeding them in the future. All help is welcome. I rate you good on your answers :) more

Open Question: Fish for new freshwater aquarium?

Okay, so I have a ten-gallon freshwater aquarium and i am hoping soon to upgrade. The only thing is my mom will only let me upgrade to a twenty gallon, and not a twenty-nine gallon. So i have had mollies, platies, neon tetras, etc. in the past, but i really wanted to go with a type of cichlid. But I heard that Cichlids cannot live in an aquarium smaller than thirty gallons. So what other types of fish do you suggest? Thanks in advance! more

Open Question: Mineral water in a tank?

I was just wondering how mineral water affects plants in a tank? A few of my plants seem to be wasting away and I don't really know what to do. I would tell you what they were but it's been quite a while since I last saw those little signs for them and I'm too lazy to find out what they are. They're probably the most common types of aquarium plants, broad leafed and pretty fragile imo. So back to the mineral water, if I add mineral water to my tank will it help my plants lived better, will it harm my fish (they're the super hardy types) or will replacing the tank water with new conditioned tap water daily be enough? I'm beginning to feel like I've gotten my mom's black thumb when it comes to aquatic plants :( so any help on keeping the poor things alive is appreciated. Oh yeah I keep my lights on for about 3-4 hours is that enough?I see, mineral water doesn't help at all? So placing my plants alone in it wouldn't help them :( maybe I'll set the dying ones next to the window to recover. more

Open Question: Salt water aquarium stocking question?

I have a large established salt-water tank. I have a small yellow tang, 2 clownfish, striped blenny and a couple of cardinal fish. Everyone is really peaceful and gets along great. Today when I was at the pet store I feel in love with this pajama cardinal. He was so much prettier than mine. Long story short I got him and now it seems like everyone is picking on him : ( but he has only been in the tank about 30 minutes. My question is will they lighten up on quit giving hime grief or is it not going to work : ( ?? Is this a normal reaction. They kinda are just chasing him occasionally and look to be bumping him with their nose. Thanks more

Has anyone else have a problem with this? i have a 10 gallon aquarium and i had 6 Guppies and some Ghost Shrimp, and when i watched for a while i wud see that every time a Guppy wud go to the bottom a ghost shrimp wud run up and bite it's tail. i mean fish gots to sleep sometimes too and it must be hard with the shrimp biting it's tail! and i wud see lil chunks taken out of the Guppy's tail. now i only have 1 Guppy that lived through that. i'm pretty sure they died from being injured by the Ghost Shrimp although it took me a while to find that out. but now that i put my ghost shrimp into a 3 gallon tank my guppy has been doing alot better. and don't worry he's not alone, i bought one guppy and 5 neon tetras yesterday and planning to purchase a few more Guppies after i see that these r doing good.like 3 more. so has anyone else had trouble with this happening? is my shrimp just more violent then most? cuz guppies r suppose to be able to put w/ ghost shrimp. so why did this happen? i made sure the ghost shrimp had plenty of food and everything. more

Open Question: tropical fish dies 12 hours after placed in the tank, why ?

ok so i got a tank yesterday with a built in filter. i also got an air pump or what ever its called that produced bubbles in the tank. the guy also game me a solution which he said i should place in the water it, purifies the water from stuff such as chlorine (according to him) he also game be some bacteria capsules which he said that after i put in the aquarium in 5 minutes, i can put in the fish in safely ( i was not sure about that, since it clearly said, wait 24 hours) am not sure of the names of the fish but one was a shark, kinda big, was very active another looked like a leopard, middle size, bulky the this small white with an orange tail, but their tails come in different mix of colors and the 4th is a black ghost so i got the tank, filled it up with water, put the liquid in, put two capsules in, and then 5 minutes later i put the fish in during the night i had an air conditioner on at around 25 degrees C, and during the night we had an electrical problem and the electricity was down for three hours. next morning , three fish were dead, only the hardy fish with the orange tail was still alive what could be the problem ? more

Resolved Question: What light should I get for my aquarium?

I have a 20 gallon aquarium and I am looking to get a better light this summer. My current light is dim and does not bring my fishes colors their fullest. Plus, live plants might be introduced into my tank this summer as well and I know most need good lighting. I measured the length of the bulb and it is 17 inches. So, my question is, what is a quality, bright light for my aquarium? I heard that it should be 2 watts per gallon. Should I be looking at a 17inch 40 watt light bulb, if this exists? What should I be looking for? Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Can I put pond weeds in my aquarium?

So, today I went to this little nursery and they had a bunch of ponds with pond lillies for sale. I have been to the big petstores around here looking for a floating plant because the fish I want to get for my aquarium like flaoting plants to shade them a bit from the lights. I couldnt find ANY flaoting aquarium plants at the pet stores, but at this nursery I found has this little pond "weed" thats has really really tiny dark red leaves, and it just floats on the water with really short roots. I asked the lady who worked there if it was for sale and she said I could have it for free because they wanted to get rid of it, so she gave me a huge bag of it. I was wondering if it would be ok to put some of it in the aquarium I have (its 10 gallons if that helps) or if it would kill the fish or something horrible would happen. (I'm thinking of getting rasboras and/or dwarf gouramis if this makes a difference) more

Resolved Question: How many more fish in my tank? help please?

How many more fish in my tank???plants? tank mates? hi. i have a 30 gallon tank. Current fish are: 8 platies (1:3 ratio genderwise) 3 female balloon mollies 1 female guppy I have the following things in the tank as well: Blue gravel (probably irrevelevant) Aquarium salt (tablespoon to every 10 gallons i think) Hornwort (a jungle lol...) I am wondering what other fish i can add to my tank? What other plants as well? Any other fish species? or algea eaters? I was thinking of buying a male balloon molly (trying to keep a 1:3 ratio) and 2 more female guppies along with a male fancy guppy. But, will the balloon molly male fight with my male fancy guppy? I also have a 10 gallon currently set up as a nursery tank, so the FRY are not a problem. (im a new breeder) The juveniles will live among the 10 gallon and 30 gallon as well, until i sell them.lol.... Any ideas? I dont believe in the 1 gallon rule of thumb either (its B.S. and truly for just new aquarist) Any help will be great. 10 points to best answer ;) more

Open Question: My fish has cloudy eyes! Help!!?

I just bought two small orange mollies and they both got Ick and died. I have treated the tank and it seems to have cleared up but now my awesome gorgeous Betta is getting cloudy eyes. ACK! I was using Tank Buddies Ick Clear to treat the water and I use Nutra Fin Betta Plus tap water conditioner and Nutrafin Cycle Biological aquarium supplement as well. I was treating the tank for about a week to get rid of the ick and I've noticed his eyes getting more cloudy slowly. I am finished the treatment now (just as of yesterday I stopped it) and will be monitoring, and have put the charcoal back into the filter. I don't know if it is due to the treatment or the stress or the ph. I don't want to have to go back again to get more stuff since buying those damn fish have already put me out with expenses for the treatments and supplements etc. Is there anything I can do that is easy and low cost to help out my fish? Oh, and he isn't eating much lately- not sure if it is because he can't see it now or not... Thanks SO MUCH for any and all advice! more

Resolved Question: Why does my ph level keep going down?

Okay, fish snobs, don't ask me the usual questions about possible deaths, diseases, incorrect water changes, etc. I'm not a neophyte. Even if I was, it's just fucking ridiculous what some aquarists speculate online when someone asks about this kind of stuff. I'm here 'cause I've examined and tried everything I can do at home at this hour. I'm just new to this ph crash phenomenon. I have a properly working filter, I do checkups almost everyday, temperature is normal, feed it properly, no plants (except some plastic ones), etc. It's a good tank. Is there a permanent device to keep my aquarium at my desired ph level? more

Open Question: I have some questions about my new 29 gallon freshwater aquarium! (mostly species suggestions)?

I currently have a ten gallon aquarium. I started with three angelfin tetras and five neons, but one of the neons and two of the angelfins died almost immediately. That was a little over a year ago. The guy at the pet shop said that my aquarium was too crowded and not to get anymore angelfins. Instead he suggested I get corey catfish. So now I have four neons, three emerald corey cats and one angelfin. I just got a new 29 gallon tank. I am waiting for it to be ready for fish, but I am thinking about what kind of fish to get. I am thinking that I should get at least one more neon and some angelfins to keep my one angelfin company. I would also like to get something pretty like a dwarf guarami or maybe a veiled angelfish. Any advice or suggestions? Will my one angelfish integrate with the new ones? more

Open Question: Why is my Betta acting lethargic?

I have a female betta in a community tank with various freshwater fish (barbs, mollies, platys, catfish, and 2 other bettas - 1 male and 1 other female). The lethargic betta does swim around and eat; however, she randomly drops to the bottom of the tank and will lay there (usually on one side or another). She seems to be breathing ok. As for her age, I picked her up from a petco approx 4 months ago (actual age unknown). She seems to be the only fish having any issues right now. I have a 30gal tank with a HOB filter, under gravel filter with two submersible pumps (overkill I know but this setup was gifted to me by some friends). The tank was well cycled before adding the bettas. The water temp stays steady at 80 deg F. I last performed a water change about two weeks ago, but I keep constant watch on the levels, which are all fine as of today (ammonia, nitrite and pH are all good) - I use a dual reagent ammonia kit so I know the results are proper. I also use water treatment solution when changing water - I add some aquarium salt and liquid fertilizer for the various live plants. I've checked for ich, velvet and other signs of parasites/fungus/bacteria but I see none. After doing some forum browsing I've read about depression in Bettas; but I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas? Thanks!Oh yeah, in case this question comes up, the tank is aerated with a 5" air disc under the gravel. more

Resolved Question: Okay, I'm getting a betta soon, but how on earth do you take care of them?

Well, obviously I'm getting a betta fish soon (actually for my birthday) and we've never had a pet before so I wanted to know what we should get for a boy and a girl (I'm not sure it's going to be okay with two genders but they might mate so... baby fish!) and like what size tank (I found a cute one at 3 gallons) and we are getting everything at Petsmart so here are some of my choices. * Eclipse Corner 5 Aquarium by Marineland : $54.99 * Eclipse System 3 Aquarium by MarineLand : $47.99 * Hawkeye Aquariums AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit (3 gal): $29.99 I have all the plants picked out (not real though) and like a rock sculpture but what do I need for it's health (be really specific) and like cleaning tools and stuff. Also, if you have a preference for a certain kind of food for it like a brand and also the stones (no gravel because it's SSOO hard to clean) then tell me please. One last thing, what, out of the choices above, do you like the most for a tank that might have like 3 or more betta in it. Thanks, I'm so not a fish expert! Also, if you want, you can find another choice for me and I'll look it over but if you've had it before and loved it then tell me PLEASE!!! I have absolutly no experiance!I know you cant put 2 guys to gether, but what about a guy and a girl? Really, how does this race still live if you said u cant have them together! more
